Solution # 1
If you’re only transferring the domain registration, your hosting service won’t be affected, and there’s no need to modify the name servers. While the name servers should automatically transfer during the process, it’s still a good idea to keep a record of them.
If you want to set the name servers to the default DNS servers provided by Webtors, you can reset them after the transfer is complete.
Steps
- Login to your account.
- Select the Domain Names Tab.
- Select the domain that you want to change name servers for.
- From within the DNS Servers section click on Edit DNS Server.
- Change the name servers as required, leaving any of the fields blank will retain the original DNS server.
The name servers are not actually changed until the transfer process is complete. If you wish to make an immediate change to the name servers, you may do so with the Registrar you are transferring from.
Solution # 2
In most cases (using EPP without any specific extensions), a domain name transfer does not affect the existing technical configuration. Therefore, the name servers can be changed either right before the transfer begins or after it is completed, but not during the transfer process.
You can not change anything on the domain name while the transfer is pending because the domain will be in pendingTransfer
EPP status, and no update on a domain name is allowed when it is under a “pending” status.
Once the transfer process begins, the former registrar has no control over it, as it falls under the authority of the registry. This is not governed by ICANN policy, this is a technical rule described in the EPP RFCs (see STD69 at https://www.rfc-editor.org/info/std69)
In gTLDs (Generic top-level domain), the transfer can typically last up to 5 days, but this is for administrative reasons, not technical ones. You can speed it up by explicitely allowing it at the current sponsoring registrar (for those allowing their customers to have this option).
In some TLDs (top-level domain), you can specify new name servers at the time of transfer, but they will only be applied once the transfer is complete. Any competent registrar can offer the same service for any TLD you’re transferring to. They will record both your transfer request and the desired name servers, and automatically apply the new name servers as soon as the transfer is finished.
